Wilmington, Delaware History: 1896 Commencement Invitation
An invitation to the Commencement Exercises for Wilmington (Delaware) High School on July 1, 1896.
The invitation measures about 5 3/16" x 8 1/4". It is printed on card stock measuring about 10 5/16" x 8 1/4", folded in half. Small print at the bottom indicates that the invitation was printed by Dittmar & Beater in Philadelphia.
There is a visible fold at the center and some soiling on the front. Still, the card may be conserved and is suitable for framing.
According to the invitation, the ceremony was held at Wilmington's Grand Opera House. Built in 1871, the concert hall in Downtown Wilmington today still presents live performances and educational outreach, with more than 100 shows a year from symphony orchestras, dance and opera to stand-up comedians.
Wilmington High School was a public high school located at 100 North duPont Road in Wilmington, Delaware, Its mascot was the red devils. As the student population decreased, the school closed in
