France & Co.—these Wilmington‑based contractors operated multiple Mid‑Atlantic lotteries, producing visually distinctive tickets in bold two‑color print. Fractional issues such as this Quarter D were sold to broaden participation, yet far fewer survive today, often redeemed or discarded after the drawing. The ornate typography, class designation, and combination numerals typify late‑1850s lottery design, bridging earlier engraved styles and the standardized formats of the post‑Civil War era. Delaware material remains notably scarcer, giving surviving examples strong regional and collector appeal.
