Wiley Post Winnie Mae Crash Photo Flat Alaska 1933
Vintage **2.75\"x4.75\"**
Original Photo of NR-105W After Nose-Over at Flat
Alaska, July 20, 1933=== DESCRIPTION ===Original vintage photograph documenting a specific, dated moment from one of the most famous flights in aviation history: Wiley Post\'s Lockheed Vega \"Winnie Mae,\" registration NR-105W, resting nose down after a hard landing at Flat, Alaska, on July 20, 1933.Post was five days into the first solo flight around the world when exhaustion and a long stretch of overcast Alaskan sky caused him to overshoot Nome. After roughly seven hours searching for any sign of an airfield, he spotted a remote Army Signal Corps radio station near the small gold mining town of Flat, on the Iditarod Trail, and put the Vega down there. The soft ground gave way under the wheels and the Winnie Mae tipped forward, damaging the propeller, engine cowling, and right landing gear strut. Post walked away unhurt. Local miners are shown here rigging a wooden hoist to lift the tail so the plane could be assessed, and a shattered wheel fairing lies in the foreground. A replacement propeller was flown in from Fairbanks, and Post was back in the air by 7:28 the next morning, going on to complete his historic solo circuit of the globe in 7 days, 18 hours, and 49 minutes. This is the same Winnie Mae now on permanent display at the Smithsonian\'s National Air and Space Museum, the aircraft that also carried Post and navigator Harold Gatty around the world in 1931 and later flew Post\'s pioneering stratosphere research in a pressure suit. This photograph catches the airplane at one of its most vulnerable and human moments, stranded in the Alaskan wilderness with a crowd of miners and townspeople gathered to lend a hand.Printed on period photographic paper with a watermark visible on the reverse, and carrying an old archive notation (\"A.7052\" and \"Vega 5\") consistent with a mid-century photo collection. Approximate overall size is 2.75 x 4.75 inches, with an image area of approximately 2.5 x 4.25 inches. You are purchasing the one photograph shown; the additional images are crops and close-ups of that same print to help you evaluate detail and condition.Every effort is made toward fact checking and provenance, including background research through news and historical archives. If any listing is incorrect in any way and you are unsatisfied with the item, please reach out and I will make it right.Provenance offer is from the Prince Daily Clarion. Sat, Sept 23, 1933 Page 1. This image is not part of the listing but is avsilable upon request.Orders placed before Noon CDT ship same day via Ground Advantage with tracking, so you know exactly when it will arrive. Returns are accepted on all items exceeding $25 in cost. All shipments receive rigid, professional packaging, sealed and protected in acid free sleeves. Shipping is free and already built into the price, so the BIN price is exactly what you pay, no surprise shipping costs at checkout.=== CONDITION ===Vintage photographic print, age consistent with mid-20th century production. The image is clear and well contrasted throughout, with the aircraft, crowd, and hoist rigging all sharply visible. There is a small stray green mark in the sky area at upper right, visible in the listing photos, that reads as an old paint or ink mark rather than emulsion damage. The cream mat border shows light overall toning consistent with age and no major creases, tears, or stains. Please review all photos closely, as they are the best representation of condition and are part of the description.
