A visually striking vintage Japanese michiyuki-style kimono coat with documented provenance from the personal collection of legendary entertainer Whoopi Goldberg.
Fashioned from a fluid, silky black textile, the garment features scattered dusty-pink floral sprays accented by bold metallic silver-and-gold geometric motifs. Its dramatic wide sleeves, long flowing silhouette and asymmetrical overlapping front panel create an elegant sculptural appearance.
The square neckline and overlapping closure are characteristic of a michiyuki, a traditional Japanese outer garment designed to be worn over a kimono. The front panel is secured by two black fabric-covered buttons, while an ivory lining finishes the upper interior.
No maker’s, size, fiber-content or country-of-origin labels are present. Because its precise origin cannot be confirmed from a label, “Japanese” and “michiyuki-style” describe the garment’s traditional design and construction.
Whoopi Goldberg
Whoopi Goldberg is one of America’s most distinctive and accomplished entertainers—a celebrated actor, comedian, author, producer and television personality whose career has crossed Broadway, motion pictures, television and recorded performance.
Born Caryn Elaine Johnson in New York City, Goldberg achieved national prominence with her acclaimed one-woman Broadway production in the 1980s. Very good vintage condition. I found no tears, stains or spots. The garment shows only minor wear consistent with age and previous ownership.
