The Douglas DC-8 is an early long range, narrow body airliner. It was a four-engine low wing aircraft powered by Pratt and Whitney JT3C Turbojets. The model was 151 feet long with a maximum takeoff weight of 273,000 pounds. The model had its first flight on 30 May 1958. It was introduced into service on 18 September 1959 with Delta Airlines and United Airlines. There were a total 556 models manufactured between 1958-1972.
For intercontinental routes, the Series 30 variants combined the more powerful JT4A engines with a one-third increase in fuel capacity and strengthened fuselage and landing gear. The DC-8-33 of November 1960 substituted 17,500 lbsJT4A-11 turbojets, a modification to the flap linkage to allow a 1.5° setting for more efficient cruise, stronger landing gear, and 315,000-pound (142,880 kg) maximum weight. Many -31 and -32 DC-8s were upgraded to this standard. A total of 57 DC-8-30s were produced (five of which were later upgraded to DC-8-50 standard).
The Series 30 DC-8 first flew on 21 February 1959 and received FAA certification on 1 February 1960.
Pan American World Airways (more commonly known as Pan Am), was an American airline that was the principle and largest international air carrier. It was the unofficial overseas flag carrier of the United States for much of the 20th century. Pan Am was founded on 14 March 1927 as Pan American Airways. Pan Am epitomized the luxury and glamour of intercontinental travel until its dissolution on 04 December 1991.
This particular aircraft (N803PA) has had an impressive career. It was first delivered to Pan American on 07 February 1960. It provided service with Pan AM for about eight years when it was sold to Delta Airlines in December of 1968. It went through eight more owners from 1975 to 1984, ending up with Norwegian company Grand Investment in February of 1984, and a short time later stored. At the time, it was re-registered as LN-PIP.
This beautiful Western Models 1:200 scale diecast reproduction of Pan Am's Douglas DC-8-33 is a highly detailed model. It comes with:
