Description Wedgwood England Scarce Antique Museum Quality Registered Black & Brown Marbled Design Glossy Glaze Stoneware Aesthetic Period 20oz Arts & Crafts 7" Pitcher Jug 1878 This almost One Hundred and Fifty Year Old Jug is in Excellent Antique Condition NOTE: there is some natural crazing throughout that is hard to notice. Their is a small very tiny chip rough spot on the rim. I had to use my magnifier to see it. There is a small surface line crack on the inside (SEE picture with pen). Very Nice Wedgwood Scarce marbled glossy Jug with an unusual handle.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
This is a scarce and fully documented Victorian Wedgwood art stoneware pitcher, officially registered with the British Patent Office on 24 August 1878, during the height of the Aesthetic Movement and early Arts & Crafts period.
The jug features Wedgwood's proprietary black and brown spot marbleized art glaze — a complex, high-fired, experimental glossy glaze developed for gallery furnishing wares and Liberty & Co. London interiors. The tall slab-sided cylindrical body, sharply formed pouring spout, and organically pulled handle represent Wedgwood's premium art stoneware production rather than standard tableware.
The base is impressed with Wedgwood's British Registered Design diamond mark, confirming official factory registration of this form, allowing this piece to be precisely dated to the day of registration — 24 August 1878 — rather than loosely “circa.”
This form and glaze combination is rarely encountered and is strongly sought by advanced Wedgwood, Aesthetic Movement, and Arts & Crafts collectors.ITEM DETAILS
