During World War II, U.S. Army Troop Carrier units played a vital role in airborne operations, transporting paratroopers, glider troops, equipment, and supplies into combat zones. These units were especially important during major Allied operations in Europe.
Troop Carrier Groups operated transport aircraft such as the Douglas C-47 Skytrain, carrying airborne troops to their drop zones and towing troop-carrying gliders into battle. They participated in major operations including the invasion of Normandy on D-Day in June 1944, Operation Market Garden in September 1944, and Operation Varsity in March 1945. Beyond airborne assaults, they also transported personnel and cargo, evacuated wounded soldiers, and delivered essential supplies to isolated or advancing Allied forces.
