Beautifully preserved original mid-century Royal Air Force (RAF) Wooden Wall Plaque Representing the historic No. 164 (Argentine-British) Squadron.
This plaque features a beautifully detailed, hand painted crest boasting the British Lion superimposed over a rising Argentine sun, topped with the pre 1953 Kings Tudor Crown. Below the crest is the legendary unit motto, "Firmes Volamos" notable as the only Spanish language motto officially recognize in the history of the Royal Air Force.
Museum-Grade Provenance: The reverse side bears the uthentic maker's ink stamp: "T.M. Lewin & Sons Ltd. 103 Jermy St, London S.W.1"
T.M. Lewin historically outfitted British officers and produced officially sanction regiment regalia. Lewin-stamped plaques are held in the permanent collection of the Imperial War Museum.
A bit of history...
This is a vital piece of aviation history. Formed in April 1942, No. 164 Squadron was a famous WWII "gift squadron" funded entirely by the British community living in Argentia. Flying Hurricanes, Typhoons, and Spitfires were brave volunteer airman who heavily supported the Allied effort by flying ground attack mission during the D-Day Normandy Landings.
Condition
This piece is in Very Good Vintage Condition. The face of the shield remains vibrant with crisp paint work. The oak base has a rich deep finish. The rear features original hanging hardware, the clear T.M. Lewin maker's stamp has natural age wear and is consistent with its 70+ year history
Perfect for collectors of WWII militaria, RAF Squadron history, or Anglo-Argentine heritage.
