The United States Civil Administration of the Ryukyu Islands (USCAR) was the American civil government that ruled Okinawa and the Ryukyu Islands from December 1950 until the territory was returned to Japan in 1972.Key Milestones of the USCAR Era• Transition from Military Rule: USCAR replaced the United States Military Government of the Ryukyu Islands, which had governed the islands since the end of the Battle of Okinawa in 1945.• The San Francisco Peace Treaty (1951/1952): When mainland Japan regained its independence, Japan retained \"residual sovereignty\" over the Ryukyus, but the U.S. maintained full administrative, legislative, and judicial control.• Local Governance: USCAR established the native Government of the Ryukyu Islands (GRI) in 1952, though USCAR retained absolute veto and override powers over any local decisions or elected officials.• Strategic Military Base: Throughout the occupation, Okinawa served as a vital staging ground and logistics hub for U.S. military operations during the Korean War and the Vietnam War.• Reversion to Japan: Following years of local political pressure and negotiations, the administration ended and Okinawa was officially returned to Japan on May 15, 1972.
History of A Troop, 5th Cavalry Regiment (1941–1957)During this period, Troop A experienced transitioning structural roles, moving from a historic horse-cavalry unit to a dismounted infantry designation, and later to a mechanized infantry company, all while serving under the 1st Cavalry Division.World War II (1941–1945)• Dismounting: In 1943, Troop A and the rest of the 5th Cavalry Regiment were completely mechanized/dismounted to fight as infantrymen, though they traditionally retained their cavalry designations.• The Admiralty Islands: Troop A entered combat in February 1944 during the Admiralty Islands campaign. A squadron of the regiment landed on Los Negros Island as the very first American ground force, successfully holding Momote Airfield against fierce Japanese night counterattacks.• Liberation of the Philippines: In October 1944, Troop A took part in the invasion of Leyte, clearing strategic airfields and pushing through swampy terrain. In January 1945, they landed at Lingayen Gulf on Luzon and joined the rapid advance to liberate Manila, heavily engaging in the bitter street-by-street battles to secure the capital.• Formal Reorganization: On July 20, 1945, the unit was officially reorganized wholly as infantry but proudly retained its historic cavalry troop name.Post-War & Occupation of Japan (1945–1950)• Following the Japanese surrender, Troop A arrived in Tokyo as part of the Allied occupation force. They performed garrison, patrol, and stabilization duties across Japan. On March 25, 1949, the U.S. Army modernized its terminology, and Troop A was officially redesignated as Company A, 5th Cavalry Regiment. The Korean War (1950–1953)• Pusan Perimeter: Following the North Korean invasion, Company A rushed to South Korea in July 1950. They were immediately thrown into intense defensive battles to hold the crucial Pusan Perimeter.• Offensive Operations: Following the Inchon landings, the unit pushed north across the 38th Parallel, participating in the capture of Pyongyang.• Chinese Intervention: They faced devastating defensive holding actions and grueling winter withdrawals through late 1950 and 1951, including legendary stands like the Battle of Chipyong-ni.• Rotation: In early 1952, after nearly 18 months of brutal, continuous frontline combat, the 5th Cavalry Regiment was rotated back to Japan to resume garrison duties. The Post-War Transition (1954–1957)Company A remained stationed in Japan for the next few years to safeguard the region. The year 1957 marked a permanent structural change for the unit:• On October 15, 1957, the 5th Cavalry Regiment was relieved from its long-standing assignment to the 1st Cavalry Division.• On November 15, 1957, the unit was reorganized under the Combat Arms Regimental System (CARS), ending the traditional regiment structure and dispersing its separate tactical elements into decentralized battalions.
