Up for sale is a remarkable, deeply narrative-driven archive of over 14 original World War II letters with three accompanying envelopes, written in 1944 by an articulate and witty young American soldier named Daniel (“Dan’l”) to his sister, Ginny, back home in Columbus, Ohio.
Unlike scattered, single-page wartime check-ins, this collection forms a compelling continuous chronological narrative, following Daniel through grueling infantry field training, an extended stay in a military hospital, and advanced pre-deployment preparation at Camp Cooke, California.
Daniel was an unusually expressive correspondent. His letters are filled with period GI slang, dry humor, candid observations, military terminology, descriptions of Army life, and references to major events and personalities of the World War II era.
JUNE 5, 1944 – D-DAY EVE
One of the most striking letters is dated June 5, 1944—the day before the Allied landings in Normandy.
Daniel congratulates his sister on graduating from school and mentions buying her a gift at the Army P.X. He then cuts the letter short, writing that there is “a slight problem tonight.”
Written on the eve of D-Day, the remark provides an evocative glimpse into the uncertainty and atmosphere surrounding American servicemen at this pivotal moment in the war.
MASSIVE 13-PAGE SEPTEMBER 6, 1944 HOSPITAL LETTER
Perhaps the centerpiece of the archive is an extraordinary 13-page letter written on American Red Cross stationery while Daniel was recovering in a military hospital.
The letter records an account Daniel says was related to him by his hospital roommate, a sailor who had survived the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor and the sinking of the USS West Virginia.
Daniel records details concerning the attack, including references to the Japanese midget submarine outside the harbor entrance and the period “18-hour warning” story.
The letter also explicitly names Walter J. Musser in connection with service aboard the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga, providing a potentially researchable link between Daniel’s correspondence and surviving military and archival records.
This lengthy letter represents an especially interesting example of wartime history being transmitted firsthand between servicemen and then preserved in contemporary correspondence.
SEPTEMBER 22, 1944 – HOSPITAL K.P. DUTY
Another memorable hospital letter contains Daniel’s hilarious descriptions of Kitchen Patrol (K.P.) duty.
He recounts his rebellious banter and arguments with a strict head nurse whom he jokingly nicknames “Lady Wadingham.” The episode provides a vivid and highly personal look at the humor, boredom, personalities, and daily routines of servicemen recovering in wartime military hospitals.

The correspondence also captures something equally important: a young serviceman thinking about what his life might look like after the war.
Daniel discusses correspondence with admissions officials at Ohio Wesleyan University (O.W.U.) as he considers his post-war college education during the period immediately following passage of the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944—the G.I. Bill.
These passages provide a fascinating counterpoint to his military experiences and document the aspirations of a young American soldier looking beyond the war toward education and civilian life.
CONDITION
The letters remain in good, authentic wartime condition. The ink is highly legible, and Daniel’s cursive handwriting is generally clean and easy to read.
As expected with approximately 80-year-old wartime correspondence, there are original mailing folds, minor toning, edge wear, and other age-related handling consistent with military field mail.
The three accompanying envelopes retain original postage, postmarks, and military censor markings, helping physically anchor portions of the collection’s chronology.
This is a substantial and unusually narrative WWII correspondence archive combining infantry training, military hospital life, GI humor and slang, Pearl Harbor recollections, the D-Day period, Columbus hometown history, and a young soldier’s plans for life and college after the war.
