During fighting in Shanghai, China, they carried a long tube filled with explosives toward enemy barbed-wire defenses, attempting to clear a path for advancing Japanese troops. All three were killed in the explosion.Their story received enormous attention in Japan and was commemorated through newspapers, films, patriotic songs, and school education.The plaque features raised portraits of the three soldiers in uniform.
