WWII Imperial Japanese Army 1943 Guadalcanal Lunga River War Correspondent Book: $250.00
DescriptionThis is an original 1943 Japanese wartime book titled “Lunga River: Record of the Bloody Battle of Guadalcanal,” written by Katsumi Saito, who served as an Imperial Japanese Army war correspondent. The Guadalcanal Campaign of 1942–1943 was one of the most important battles of the Pacific War. Japanese and Allied forces fought for months over control of the island and its strategically important airfield. After severe fighting and increasingly difficult supply conditions, Japanese forces withdrew from Guadalcanal in February 1943.This book was published on September 5, 1943 — only about seven months after the Japanese withdrawal. The title “Lunga River” has particular significance. The Lunga River runs through the northern part of Guadalcanal, near Henderson Field, the airfield that became the central strategic objective of the campaign. Japanese forces repeatedly attempted to regain control of this area, making the Lunga region one of the names closely associated with the fighting on Guadalcanal. The book contains wartime photographs as well as extensive written accounts covering combat, jungle conditions, airfield operations, night attacks, desperate fighting and the withdrawal. What makes this book particularly interesting is its immediacy. This is not a postwar history written decades later, but a wartime account published in Japan in 1943 by a Japanese Army correspondent who had been sent to the battlefield. For collectors of Guadalcanal, Pacific War history and Imperial Japanese Army material, it offers an unusual opportunity to examine how the battle was experienced and recorded from the Japanese side while the war was still being fought.More than 80 years old, the book shows age-related toning, staining and general wear. Please examine the photographs carefully for condition.Guadalcanal through the eyes of a Japanese Army correspondent — published only months after the battle ended.Own a Piece of History.Shipping FedEx or Japan Post International Buyers - Please Note: Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to offerding or buying.
