WWI Campaign Hat & Yellow \"Cavalry\" Hat CordJOHN B. STETSON Co.PhiladelphiaNO. 1 QUALITY1224 CHESTNUT STREET5-Row-Stitched BrimFur FeltSilk \"Shoelace\" ChinstrapNICE!!!+ This is an original CAVALRY piece from the days of Mounted Troops...such the 26th Regiment (PS)of the Second World War -- Regular Army, Philippine Scouts-- who staged the last Cavalry charge --Troop G on 16 January 1942, led by LT Edwin Ramsey, charge Homma\'a Japanese armor and infantry on Bataan in support of a delaying action.+ This piece is from the, arguably, the nation\'s premier hat manufacturer, the JOHN B. STETSON COMPANY of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and major supplier of hats to the War Department. The company\'s legendary \"Boss of the Plains\" hat, introduced in 1865 cemented their reputation as THE hat of the cowboy and the frontiersman and subsequently the American soldier and Marine.+ All of the troops of the A.E.F. wore Campaign hats at the ports of embarkation in 1917-1918 and in the training camps in France. There these broad-brim \"field hats\" were exchanged for the soft, more practical \"overseas caps,\" more suitable for the confined spaces of the trenches. The Campaign hat was worn by the Army and the Marine Corps up until the outbreak of WWII...but the Cavalry (along with Drill Instructors and Range Officers) retained the Campaign hat throughout WWII.+ ZEROmoth bites, tracking, stains, fading, or deformation of the high-quality FUR FELT\"Montana\" peaked crown or the brim with its iconic \"5-rows of stitching.\" The front of the crown has never been perforated for a Collar Disc or a DUI.+ The \"pebbled\" LAMBSKIN SWEATBAND is intact and free of major tears and is still securely stitched to the fur felt crown. It shows perspiration staining and minute traces of flaking. It is marked twice with the Trooper\'s hand-lettered name.+ The tiny russet SILK BOW at the rear seam is present. There is no size TAG, but the hat appears to be approximately a size \"7\", plus or minus.+ The early gold gilt JOHN B. STETSON Co. \"shield\" logos and the Philadelphia street address are legibly stamped on the Sweatband and are in great shape:JOHN B. STETSON Co.PhiladelphiaNO. 1 QUALITY1224 CHESTNUT STREET
+ZERO snags, fraying, fading, or stains to the period-correct, woven yellow \"CAVALRY\" HAT CORD. It is in perfect condition.+ The ribbed grosgrain silk HATBANDand its BOW are intact with no \'wrinkles\', vertical rib-separations, stains, or fraying.+ ZERO loss of paint or corrosion to the finish on the olive drab painted \"eyelet\" VENTILATORS. Eachis perfectly set in the fur felt.+ZEROfraying of thewoven silk \"Shoelace\" CHINSTRAPwith the early 3/4\" crimped metal TIPS. This is the very earliest style with that lies underneath the Sweatband and protrudes at the seam. There are no cuts or grommets in the brim!

+The manufacture of this hat datesfrom between 1916 to 1920 atwhich time the following features appeared, only to be discontinuedAFTER1920:

(1)the 5-Rowsof ornamental BrimStitching;

(2)the use of the an actual ReedStiffenerat the base of the LambskinSweatband;

(3)the iconic \"tell tale\" mark of a true WWI-era hat: the 1\"x1\" paper tag that reads \"UNITEDHATTERS OF NORTH AMERICA / Union Made / REGISTERED\" anddepicts \'two hands shaking beneath a globe flanked by two flags\';

(4)the taller 5-3/4\"Crown(which was later lowered).
