RARE Robert Carlin Print
Death of von Richthofen
Featuring the authentic hand-signed autograph of
Captain O. C. \"Boots\" LeBoutillier
Squadron Leader in 209 Squadron RAF and participant in the
last dogfight of Manfred von Richthofen on 21 April 1918
Here we see LeBoutillier, in his Sopwith Camel, watching as the Baron breaks off combat with Wilfred \"Wop\" May and banks right trying to gain altitude and get back to his side of the lines. May continues flying to the left relieved he is not under attack anymore (at the time he had no idea it was the Red Baron on his tail). It was precisely at this moment that Australian ground gunners on Corbie Ridge below opened up on the Baron. The Baron would be dead within 5 minutes and aviation history would have one of its first mysteries; who killed the Red Baron, Capt. Brown (credited with this victory) or Australian gunners Buie or Popkin.
LeBoutillier would survive the war with 10 victories. After the war he became a stunt pilot and flew in many Hollywood movies including Hells Angels. He also flew in the National Air Races and gave flying instruction to Amelia Earhart. He passed on 12 May 1983.
