WW1 1917 Royal Artillery RFA Embroidered Crest Named Gunner HED Taylor MilitariaDescriptionA superb and genuinely fascinating First World War Royal Artillery hand-embroidered regimental crest, dated 1917 and retaining its original handwritten attribution to the serviceman who made it.The embroidery depicts the traditional Royal Artillery field gun beneath the King’s Crown, together with the mottoes:UBIQUE - “Everywhere”QUO FAS ET GLORIA DUCUNT - “Where Right and Glory Lead”What makes this example particularly special is the surviving inscription on the reverse:H. E. D. TAYLORSHELSLEYBISHOP’S CASTLESALOPWorked by above1917Research has identified the maker as:Gunner 228267 Henry Edward Davies TaylorRoyal Field Artillery38th Brigade RFATaylor enlisted on 21 June 1916 and served overseas during the First World War. His surviving military records show that he was discharged through sickness on 7 January 1918, aged just 19, as no longer physically fit for war service. He was subsequently awarded Silver War Badge No. 300496 and was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal. The 1917 date written on the reverse places the embroidery firmly within Taylor’s wartime service.Given that Taylor was medically discharged through sickness only a short time later, it is possible that the embroidery was undertaken during a period of illness or convalescence. However, his surviving records are incomplete and this has not been definitively established, so the piece is not being offered as confirmed hospital or POW work. The original handwritten backing is particularly important as it provides the direct link between the embroidery and its maker and has therefore been left completely intact.A wonderful piece of named and researched WWI Royal Artillery militaria, with considerably more historical interest than an anonymous regimental embroidery.ConditionGood antique condition considering its age of over 100 years. There is age-related wear, fading, discolouration and deterioration consistent with a textile of this period. The original reverse/backing also shows considerable age and wear. Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description. The piece has not been cleaned or restored, and the original handwritten backing has deliberately been preserved.Research suppliedCopies/details of the research relating to Gunner 228267 Henry Edward Davies Taylor can be supplied with the piece, including his military service, medal and Silver War Badge information.A rare opportunity to acquire a personally attributed and dated piece of WWI Royal Field Artillery soldier-work with the identity of its original maker established.
