Civil War print—“Great Sumter Meeting
in Union Square, New York”by Winslow HomerHarper\'s Weekly —
April 25, 1863 This is an attractive wood engraved single sheet from an issue of Harper\'s Weekly published in 1863, in the midst of the Civil War. It is over 160 years old! Harper’s was the most popular illustrated paper in America during the second half of the 1800s, and provided the nation its most enduring pictorial coverage of the War.This overall sheet measures 11 x 16 inches in size. It is in excellent, very attractive condition, with some bits of light discoloration along the page\'s edges (see photo). The scene shows three ladies in fancy dress overlooking a war rally in New York City\'s Union Square. Below them is a bustling crowd, with a cannon firing off, and some men climbing light poles to get a better view. A large U.S. flag flies on the rooftop, and a big banner saying “One Flag, One Country, One Destiny” is visible among the crowd. The print will be accompanied by a photocopy of a related story that appeared in Harper\'s, titles “The Sumter Meeting,” which gave a description of Union Square rally as reported by the New York Tribune. The artist for the drawing was WINSLOW HOMER. This work was done when Homer was a young man, early in his career and a decade before he became famous for his Gloucester series of engravings, and later his paintings of the Maine seaside. The drawing is Plate #104 in Philip Beam\'s authoritative reference book titled Winslow Homer\'s Magazine Engravings._gsrx_vers_1736 (GS 9.9.5 (1736))
