For the tough beauty in your life! This charming teacup and saucer set by the iconic Royal Albert company is a wonderful member of their 1963 "Brigadoon" pattern. It features lovely, pastel-toned paintings of pink and blue thistles on both the interior and exterior of the cup and the interior of the saucer. Its delicately scalloped rims, handle, and cup foot are hand-painted with gold. Made of famously durable bone china, it is slightly translucent when held up to bright light. The cup shape is Royal Albert's Montrose design, which is designed comfortably balance with the drinker's thumb on top of the handle and middle finger below it. (The Montrose is the shape used in Royal Albert's Old Country Rose pattern, which is believed to be the bestselling bone china dinnerware set of all time.)Don't be fooled by the pastel colors and nostalgic name, though! The thistle has beautiful, delicate flowers, but is a thorny, uncompromising plant that is legendary for having saved Scotland from Viking invaders. In the 1200s, Norsemen landed at night to sack the village of Larg. A barefooted berserker supposedly stepped on a thistle though, and his scream roused the clanspeople to beat them back. This eventually led to the thistle being named the National Flower of Scotland, and the symbol of theMost Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle, the highest honour Scotland can bestow on an individual. The motto of the Order, Nemo me impune lacessit, means "No one provokes me with impunity."
