~ History & Provenance: The Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad—affectionately known to generations of railworkers and enthusiasts as the Milwaukee Road—traces its ultimate lineage back to the incorporation of the Milwaukee & Waukesha Railroad in Wisconsin in 1847. Following explosive growth and strategic rail construction connecting the booming industrial hubs of the Midwest, the company officially rebranded under the name Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway Company in 1874. By the late 1880s, its massive right-of-ways formed an absolute transportation empire across Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, South Dakota, Iowa, and Michigan. The company was a legendary pioneer in engineering, noted for moving its operations to Chicago\'s skyscraper offices and introducing early luxury breakthroughs like steam-heated cars and electrified transcontinental mountain routes. This exact corporate name variation remained the line\'s official signature until its historic western expansion pushed all the way to the Pacific Northwest. Following a massive financial re-organization in 1925-1927, the company added \"Pacific\" to its legal name. Finding an iron track tool stamped distinctly with the early C.M. & St.P. R.R. insignia firmly dates its operational workspace to the high-demand peak of the late 19th-century American rail boom.— Hubbard & Co. (based out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) was the primary contract supplier of heavy track chisels, spike drivers, and adzes for the major transcontinental rail systems during the late 1800s and early 1900s.
