Description:
Up for sale is a beautiful, highly collectible piece of Southeastern Native American folk art: a vintage Coushatta (Koasati) Nation hand-woven pine needle effigy doll basket. This unique two-piece item features a highly detailed top portion sculpted into a traditional female doll with braided hair and individual arms, which lifts off to reveal a hollow, round woven basket base.
The piece is crafted using traditional coiled longleaf pine needles tightly bound with natural and dyed red raffia fibers.
Crucially, this basket comes with its original merchant/artisan tag completely intact. The tag identifies it as an authentic "Indian Craft Koasati" piece from Elton, Louisiana, and is hand-signed by the respected tribal artisan, Elsie Sylestine. Baskets with verified, signed provenance tags are rare and highly sought after by serious collectors.
Condition:
Excellent vintage condition. The weaving is remarkably tight and intact with no missing stitches, broken needles, or structural damage. The colors on the decorative red raffia stitching remain vibrant. The original paper tag shows minor age-appropriate wear and light fading but remains perfectly legible and securely attached.
