Up for sale is a rare, historically significant piece of American homefront history. This 1941 Butterick 1697 costume pattern features an incredibly iconic Uncle Sam and George Washington design, highly popular during World War II-era pageants and community celebrations. Because it is a war-time release, the envelope cover features austere black-and-white ink artwork designed to conserve ink and materials.
This is an original, factory-cut pattern featuring unprinted tissue paper templates shaped by the factory.
Condition Details:
Envelope: The envelope is shows classic signs of age, including noticeable paper tanning, minor discoloration, and wear/small tears along the top edges and sides as pictured. I will ship the pattern pieces outside of the envelope so as not to stress it further.
Instructions / Booklet: The comprehensive instructional guide is included. It is clean and intact with tanning due to age.
Pattern Pieces: The factory-cut unprinted tissue pieces are structurally in very good vintage shape. They appear to have been lightly handled or used in the past, as at least one template piece shows tiny straight-pin holes from being attached to fabric. There may be a minor tears that I have missed, however, the tissue paper remains clean and fully functional for sewing or tracing! All 24 pieces are included. I’m assuming the 24th piece is fly, which is unnumbered as far as I can see.
