Luftschiffbau Zeppelin Werke, Grosse Halle, WWI EraDESCRIPTIONThis vintage German postcard shows the \"Grosse Halle des Luftschiffbau Zeppelin,\" one of the large steel-framed airship construction halls at the Zeppelin works on Lake Constance (Bodensee) near Friedrichshafen, Germany. The photographic image, reproduced in halftone for postcard circulation, captures the tapered stern of a rigid airship inside the hall, with towering scaffold-braced support structures and hall doors dwarfing the ship below. Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin\'s original airship work began in a small floating wooden hall anchored in Manzell Bay in 1899, but as the company, formally organized as Luftschiffbau Zeppelin GmbH in 1908, shifted from experimental prototypes to full scale production, a new, larger fixed shipyard rose nearby at Löwental starting in 1913, with additional large steel halls added there in 1915 and 1916 to keep pace with wartime demand for Navy and Army Zeppelins during the First World War. The scale of steel bracing and towers pictured here is consistent with those larger Löwental era halls rather than the earlier, smaller floating hall at Manzell. This card documents that pivotal industrial build up, when Friedrichshafen became the center of Germany\'s military airship production, an output that ran to dozens of Zeppelins used for wartime bombing raids and naval reconnaissance, well before the company\'s more famous postwar airships, the Graf Zeppelin and Hindenburg, were built on the same grounds. The reverse carries the standard German \"Postkarte\" address format of the period, with printed fields for An (To), in (city), and Wohnung, Strasse u. Hausnummer (residence, street and house number), plus a dotted stamp box in the upper right corner.
