Vintage Van’s Plantation Cigar Box Wisconsin Factory 58 Tobacco Advertising For Sale

BUCK’S STATEMENT:

There was a time when the neighborhood cigar counter was lined with boxes like this—brightly decorated, stacked behind glass and opened throughout the day as customers stopped in for their usual smoke. Before cigar boxes became garage organizers and catchalls for buttons, fishing tackle and old photographs, they were miniature pieces of advertising art. This old Van’s Plantation box still carries that character beautifully, from its faux wood-grain red panels and elaborate green-and-gold borders to the wonderful illustrated plantation-and-tobacco scene hidden beneath the lid. Open it up and you’re immediately looking back into the era of the corner tobacconist and the American cigar trade.

The box retains its original Van’s Plantation graphics, interior paper label, portions of the old blue tax/revenue stamp and the factory information on the underside identifying Factory No. 58, Wisconsin. It has definitely lived a life, with edge wear, staining, scratches, paper loss, writing/markings and general age-related wear throughout, all visible in the photographs. That’s part of the appeal here—we haven’t tried to turn an old cigar box into a new one. Whether displayed open for its colorful interior artwork or closed among an old tobacco, general-store or advertising collection, it’s a surviving little piece of the days when even a disposable wooden box was designed to catch your eye from across the counter.
