Beautiful vintage handcrafted Syrian/Damascus-style jewelry and trinket box featuring exceptionally intricate geometric micro-mosaic inlay across the lid and exterior sides. This traditional Syrian woodworking style, closely associated with Damascus, is known as Damascene micro-mosaic, intarsia, marquetry, or mosaic inlay. Tiny contrasting pieces are arranged by hand into elaborate repeating stars, diamonds and Moorish-inspired geometric patterns.
Traditional examples are made from natural woods and may combine walnut, olive, lemon, rosewood, other fruitwoods, shell, mother-of-pearl, or bone to create contrasting colors and details. The exact wood species and inlay materials in this particular box are unknown. This example features a highly detailed central diamond composition, multiple patterned borders, coordinating side decoration, a hinged lid and a vivid red velvet-lined interior.
