Lot of 4 Vintage Southwestern Kachina Dolls – Approx. 8\" – Signed / Inscribed
Wonderful group of four vintage handcrafted Southwestern kachina-style dolls, each measuring approximately 8 inches tall. These came together from an older collection and feature carved wood construction with applied fur, leather/suede, feathers, shells, beads and painted details.
The group includes:
- Mudhead – underside clearly inscribed “Mudhead / by Sarah.”
- Watermelon Clown – whimsical black-and-white striped figure with watermelon slices at the feet; underside is inscribed “Clown … / by Sarah.”
- Mona White – striking white-haired figure with turquoise-colored bead necklaces; underside is inscribed “Mona White” along with a faded/unidentified maker inscription or mark.
- Fourth Dancer Figure – brown/red figure with fur, shells and painted decoration. The underside has a partially legible handwritten inscription/signature that may read D. Smith, but the maker has not been independently confirmed.
The two Sarah-signed examples are especially interesting. A similar pair of approximately 8-inch kachinas catalogued at sale as “Two Kachinas by Sarah,” including an 8.25-inch Mudhead, has appeared in the collector market.
All four display very well together and would make an attractive addition to a Southwestern, Native American art, folk art, or kachina collection.
Condition: Vintage pre-owned condition with age-related wear. Natural wood bases show drying/checking and cracks, and there is wear to feathers, fur, leather and other applied materials. Some inscriptions are faded or difficult to read. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the condition description.
Approximate height: 8\" each.
Sold together as a lot of four.
Attribution note: Two figures are clearly signed/inscribed “by Sarah.” The remaining maker inscriptions have not been conclusively identified. No tribal affiliation is being represented for the group beyond what is visible in the photographs and inscriptions.
