Vintage Norwegian Geilo Folk Art Knife Norge Viking Ship Wood Sheath 1940sCategory:
Collectibles > Knives, Swords & Blades > Collectible Fixed Blade Knives > VintageCondition:
Pre-owned vintage condition. Knife and sheath show age-related wear, patina, oxidation and surface marks consistent with an approximately 70–80 year old piece. Blade has visible discoloration/oxidation and appears to have been used and sharpened in the past. Wooden handle and sheath retain attractive original carved/burned decoration and painted color. Leather belt hanger shows age and wear but remains attached. Please review all photographs carefully as they are an important part of the description.Description:Beautiful and unusual vintage Norwegian fixed-blade folk-art knife with matching carved wooden sheath, believed to date from approximately the 1940s to early 1950s.This knife is decorated in the traditional Geilo/Hol Norwegian style and features multiple hand-decorated Viking sailing ships, Norwegian red, white and blue coloring, extensive burned/carved line decoration, and the word “Norge” prominently displayed on the wooden sheath. Both the handle and sheath appear to have been decorated as a matching set.The knife has a traditional Scandinavian-style fixed blade fitted into an extensively decorated wooden handle. The handle features Viking ship imagery, carved/burned details and decorative work extending around the handle. The wooden sheath is particularly attractive and unusual. It features:• Hand-carved / burned decorative detailing
• Multiple Viking sailing ship motifs
• “Norge” inscription
• Original red, white and blue painted accents
• Decorative laminated-color detail around the sheath opening
• Metal collar / throat fitting
• Original-style leather belt hanger
• Matching folk-art decoration throughoutThis type of wooden sheath is associated with the Geilo/Hol Norwegian knife-making tradition, particularly examples produced during and following World War II when wood was commonly used for sheaths. The style is closely associated with the historic Geilo knife-making community and the Erling Brusletto / Geilo Knivfabrikk tradition. However, I have not located a clearly readable maker's stamp on this example, so it is being sold as an unattributed vintage Norwegian Geilo/Hol folk-art knife rather than representing it as definitively manufactured by Brusletto. The craftsmanship and decoration make this a particularly appealing example for collectors of:Norwegian knives
Scandinavian folk art
Geilo knives
Brusletto-related knives
Viking memorabilia
Norwegian antiques
Vintage hunting and outdoor knives
Nordic decorative artsThe knife has not been aggressively cleaned or restored. The aged finish, blade oxidation, wood patina and wear have been left intact to preserve its vintage character. Please examine the photographs closely for exact condition, construction and decoration.A very distinctive old Norwegian knife that displays beautifully and would make an excellent addition to a Scandinavian knife, folk-art or Viking-themed collection.Approximate Era:
