This is an authentic indigenous textile from the Western Highlands of Guatemala crafted around the 1950s. The coin purse is a miniature 3-inch pocket pouch, bolsita, and is a stellar example of traditional Mayan tapestry crochet, created before the artisan markets transitioned to mass commercial production. It is made from authentic hand-spun wool and has a \"hairy\" texture. It has no zipper and uses instead a traditional double-sided seamless pocket structure with a small, unlined top slip opening that folds over to hold coins safely when tucked into a woven waist sash, faja. It features a perfectly mirrored geometric starburst motif on both sides. This item is museum quality. My parents purchased it at least 60 or 70 years ago.
