This striking vintage centerpiece is a Loevsky & Loevsky (L&L) Hollywood Regency compote featuring an elaborate three-tier botanical design of sculpted and stamped metal leaves surrounding a central stem.
The piece is marked L&L and #6848 on the underside of the ornate base. Loevsky & Loevsky was known primarily as a trade manufacturer, producing decorative metal components and finished pieces for the home furnishings and lighting industries rather than selling directly to the public. Their work is particularly associated with highly decorative lighting and Hollywood Regency interiors. The centerpiece is constructed around a threaded central assembly and can be disassembled from top to bottom. Its substantial cast aluminum base supports tiers of stamped steel leaves, all finished in a wonderfully subdued green verdigris-style finish. The uppermost leaves form a natural cradle for the bowl and give the completed piece the appearance of a large blooming flower.
A scalloped vintage glass bowl has been carefully selected to complete the centerpiece. L&L sourced glassware from outside suppliers and used a variety of bowls with its decorative metalwork, making the marriage of an appropriate period-style bowl particularly well suited to this example. The condition of the metalwork is especially impressive. The leaves retain their original-looking finish beautifully, including the difficult-to-see undersides, with remarkably little evidence of wear. The base shows some expected age-related wear and scratching underneath. Please see the photographs for the excellent overall presentation.
Beyond its intended use as a centerpiece or compote, this is an exceptionally sculptural piece of vintage decorative art. The graduated leaves, floral form and scalloped glass bowl create a dramatic centerpiece from virtually every viewing angle. A wonderful example of the exuberant botanical design associated with Hollywood Regency décor—and an unusually difficult L&L form to encounter today.
