Leinenkugel's, officially the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company, was founded in 1867 in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, by Jacob Leinenkugel, a Prussian immigrant whose family had brewing traditions in Germany. It is the seventh oldest brewery in the United States and remains the oldest operating business in Chippewa Falls.
Key historical milestones include:
Prohibition Survival (1919–1933): The brewery survived the Volstead Act by producing "near beer" (called Leino) and becoming one of the region's largest soda bottlers. Leinenkugel women mortgaged their homes to maintain the facility for the return to brewing.Expansion and Acquisition (1988): After remaining a regional staple for decades, the family-owned brewery was sold to Miller Brewing Company to stay solvent, though the Leinenkugel family retained operational control. This partnership enabled national distribution.National Breakthrough (2007): The launch of Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy drove massive demand, leading to the brewery's first nationwide distribution and integration into the broader MillerCoors portfolio.Ownership Changes (2016): Following the formation of Molson Coors Beverage Company after acquiring SABMiller’s stake in MillerCoors, Molson Coors became the sole owner of Leinenkugel’s.Recent Operations (2025–2026): Molson Coors closed the original Chippewa Falls brewery in 2025, consolidating production primarily at the 10th Street Brewery in Milwaukee and the pilot facility at the Leinie Lodge in Chippewa Falls, though the family maintains its heritage and hospitality presence there.
