Beautiful vintage porcelain Madonna figure designed by Austrian sculptor Hans Knesl and impressed “KNESL – WIEN” on the lower back/base.
This serene modernist Madonna is modeled with a bowed head, raised blessing/prayer hands, softly painted lashes and lips, pale blond hair, and a lavender-pink veil. Her graceful elongated hands and stylized facial features give the piece a striking Art Deco / early modernist look.
The figure measures approximately 8 inches tall and has a hollow base/opening underneath. These Knesl Wien Madonnas are commonly associated with German porcelain maker Metzler & Ortloff; this design is often attributed to the 1920s–1930s period.
