A traditional Hungarian, hand-embroidered vest, waistcoatwith small flowers on black velvet background.
It is from Szék, an ethnic Hungarian village in centralTransylvania (Romania). The town received its name in the Middle Ages from thelocal salt mines (szik in the old language means salt). The Szék communitymanaged to preserve its unique folk traditions, distinctive styles of music, dance, embroidery, and costume through the centuries. Many of the oldervillagers still wear their traditional costume as they go about their everydaylife.
This was a present from my brother-in-law who was a dancerin the Hungarian Folk Ensemble (Állami Népi Együttes). The vest was used onstage in various performances.
It’s in good condition, some of the threads are fraying, butI’m sure it can be mended.
It’s quite small, though I don’t know the exact size. It’sprobably and 8 or 10. It doesn’t fit me anymore.
