Absolutely stunning circa 1920's-40's, museum-quality piece of traditional Hungarian folk art. This authentic Matyó circular textile centerpiece features exceptionally dense hand embroidery in a vibrant, multi-colored palette on a black ground. While most Matyó textiles feature strictly floral arrangements, this highly collectible piece showcases a rare and beautifully stylized central bird motif stitched in brilliant golds, oranges, and yellows. The bird is encircled by a dense field of iconic "Matyó Roses", tulips and other floral clusters in deep purples, rich shades of reds, dusty pinks, yellow, blue and olive greens.The entire piece is finished with its original, hand-tied ombre silk fringe.
Very good vintage/antique condition overall. The heavily packed embroidery work is remarkably well-preserved with vibrant colors and tight stitching. The main textile is structurally sound. There is some wear to the outer edge, including a section where the silk fringe has worn away/frayed (see close-up photos). The remaining multi-colored silk fringe shows natural twisting and minor tangling consistent with age.Measurements: The main embroidered textile measures approximately 23 1/2 inches across.
