Vintage Huichol Yarn Art Mask For Sale

Beautifully crafted Huichol mask. This folk art from the Sierra Madre Mountains employs the very old technique of carving a wooden form then using a beeswax base as an adhesive for thin strands of colored yarn in creating a desired image. It is a difficult and time consuming process done completely by hand.

Every symbol in this design has a significance. The deer is a spiritual guide, the peyote cactus is the doorway to the spiritual world, the candles/ shamanic arrows are the spiritual illumination, and the bull head represents sacrifice, sustenance, and the cycle of physical life. It is a meaningful and very well executed work. Has been well cared for and is in excellent condition. Measures approximately 6 1/2 x 4 1/4 inches.
