For sale is a vintage silver gelatin print of a photograph attributed to the legendary German born chronicler of Mexico, Hugo Brehme (1882-1954).
Entitled \"El Triunfo\", taken circa 1910, it depicts a street scene in front of the EL TRIUNFO pulqueria in the barrio of Santa Anita. The proprietor, holding a large jug is sharing a glass of pulque with another indigenous man. Numerous other men, women, dogs and children are also in the photo. A barrel advertising the nature of the shop\'s business, playfully adorned with the legend \"El Borracho\", is also in the scene.
This print is blindstamped with the logo of Fotografia Casasola, the famous photo shop in Mexico City DF. The phone number on the blindstamp indicates this particular print was made from the original negative likely sometime in the 1940s - 1960s.
This sepia tone print has the typical semi-gloss surface and fine detail found in gelatin silver prints of this era. It is blank on verso, and has light yellowing on the back from the original cardboard mounting. The front has an even tone.
The print itself is 35.4 centimeters x 27.8 centimeters. The image is 34 centimeters x 26.7 centimeters. There are no folds or creases. One corner has a very very small defect as shown in the pictures.
I obtained this item from the estate of the original owner who had acquired it from Fotografia Casasola, still in its original rustic frame. It was very dusty from being in deep storage for at least 50 years. I removed the print from the frame, which wasn’t really adequate to protect and display such a fine important print.
