Striking vintage Mexican folk art mask, believed to originate from Guerrero, Mexico, featuring an unusual three-dimensional composition with a smaller carved human/religious figure applied prominently over the larger face.
The main mask is hand-carved from exceptionally lightweight wood and entirely hand-painted in a vivid polychrome palette. The large stylized face features dramatic turquoise-blue eyes, heavy black brows and lashes, softly shaded red cheeks, red lips, and carved black hair. The smaller raised figure is especially eye-catching, with a black beard, bright turquoise garment, hands held together in a prayer-like pose, and a tall red headdress decorated with a prominent dark cross.
This layered “figure-on-face” composition is characteristic of the imaginative carved-mask tradition associated with Guerrero folk art. Similar Guerrero examples are known with human, religious, animal, and fantastic figures carved or mounted in high relief over a larger mask.
The mask is deeply hollowed on the reverse and has open eye slits, showing that it was constructed in the traditional form of a wearable mask rather than as a flat decorative plaque. Because its specific ceremonial or dance use cannot be confirmed, it is being offered as a Mexican folk art / collectible carved wood mask.
The wood is remarkably light for the mask’s size. Lightweight soft woods are traditionally used by mask carvers in Guerrero; however, the exact species of wood has not been independently identified and is therefore not stated as confirmed.
The identity of the smaller figure is also not definitively known. The cross on the headdress, beard, and praying hands strongly suggest a Christian religious or saint-like figure, but no specific saint, bishop, or historical character is being attributed without documentation.

Vintage pre-owned condition with age-appropriate surface wear.
There is a visible vertical age crack in the lower portion of the mask, extending through the area beneath the raised figure and toward the lower lip/chin area. The crack is clearly shown in the photographs and should be considered part of the condition.
Additional signs of age and hand-crafted character include areas of paint wear, small scratches, rubbing, minor paint loss, surface marks, and natural irregularities in the carved wood. The reverse shows substantial age, discoloration, wear, and irregularities consistent with a handmade wooden piece.
The painted surface retains strong color and visual impact, and the raised figure and facial details remain highly expressive.
No maker’s signature or identifying mark was observed.
