Vintage Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico Sport Fishing Postcard – Gulf of California
Original vintage used postcard featuring a colorful mid-century view of a sportfishing boat cruising the waters off Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico, in the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez).
The scene shows a classic fishing boat surrounded by the dramatic rocky coastline and blue waters for which the Guaymas area became known among American sportfishing travelers.
Printed Caption
The reverse carries the original bilingual caption:
“Girls having fun on a fast sportfishing boat, in the Gulf of California in Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico.”
Spanish:
“Paseandose y descansando en uno de los veloces y hermosos barcos de pesca deportiva, en el Golfo de Cortes en Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico.”
This translates approximately as:
“Cruising and relaxing aboard one of the fast and beautiful sportfishing boats in the Gulf of California at Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico.”
Handwritten Message
The sender enthusiastically describes being in the Guaymas area and preparing for a fishing trip.
The message reads approximately:
“Boy this is lots better than selling Heath a ‘pale Xmas ad.’ Sure nice here. Going out on a charter boat in the morning. They are sure catching the sailfish here. Sure a lot of doves coming down here. Killed two, sticking my hand out of the window. They’re sure thick along the highway. Caught 123 lbs. today. ‘Buckie’.”
Some words are difficult to interpret because of the sender’s handwriting; please refer to the photographs for the complete original message.
This is a particularly interesting example because the handwritten correspondence directly relates to sport fishing and outdoor life in Mexico, complementing the fishing scene pictured on the front.
