Where the Mechanic Rode, Kodak Photo PaperDESCRIPTIONThis vintage Graf Zeppelin (LZ 127) photo postcard gets close to the machinery, a tight low angle shot of one of her engine gondolas, printed on Kodak \"Photo Post Card\" stock from an earlier period negative rather than an original-era real photo postcard, giving you the same striking image at a friendlier price point.The two blade propeller fills the foreground, mounted ahead of the slung, aluminum-clad pod that housed one of her five 550 horsepower Maybach engines.A crewman in a leather flying helmet stands braced against the hull rigging above, and a second man in an officer\'s cap leans out from a hatch on the gondola itself.That hatch was no small detail. Each of the five engine cars carried a mechanic on duty around the clock, and reaching one meant climbing down a connecting ladder from the hull to swap places when a watch changed, a job done in open air at cruising altitude.A minimum of 21 mechanics were carried on every flight to keep that three shift rotation running in all five gondolas at once. These particular engines were also a genuine engineering first for their day, built to burn Blau gas, a fuel gas roughly the same density as air, so that as it was consumed the ship didn\'t lose weight the way it would burning gasoline, which meant the crew never had to vent precious hydrogen just to stay in balance. It\'s part of why Graf Zeppelin went on to fly 590 flights and over a million miles across nine years of service without a single passenger ever seriously injured, still the safety record rigid airships are measured against. A small handwritten archival number is visible near the propeller in the lower left of the image itself (part of the photographic print, not damage to the card).
