An uncommon look inside the hidden girder skeleton and gas cells of a Golden Age airshipDESCRIPTIONThis vintage photograph postcard shows the interior structure of the Graf Zeppelin, the LZ-127 airship, printed on Kodak photographic paper from an original period negative; the \"Kodak Paper\" stamp box on the back places this specific print in the 1950s or later, making it a later photographic reproduction of the image rather than a postcard mailed during the airship\'s active years.The view looks down the ship\'s interior corridor with the fabric gas cells hanging like loose curtains along one side and the duralumin ring-girder framework of the hull, crossed with its distinctive diagonal wire bracing, running along the other, while a crew member\'s small silhouette walks the catwalk in the distance.Graf Zeppelin\'s hull was built from eighteen major ring frames of triangular duralumin girders, spaced roughly fifteen meters apart and cross braced with steel wire, holding seventeen hydrogen gas cells made of cotton fabric lined with a thin, gas tight membrane and wrapped in a protective netting, the very netting visible draped through this image.Twelve of those seventeen gas bays also carried a second, separate cell beneath the hydrogen one, filled with Blau gas, a propane like fuel unique to Graf Zeppelin among the great airships, which let the engines run without venting hydrogen to compensate for burned fuel weight and gave the ship its record setting range.Views like this one, showing the hull\'s structural interior rather than the ship in flight or at its mooring mast, are far less common in surviving Graf Zeppelin photography and postcards than the standard exterior and dockside shots, since access to the ship\'s interior during construction or maintenance was limited to workers and crew rather than the public.The Graf Zeppelin, built by Luftschiffbau Zeppelin under chairman Hugo Eckener and named for airship pioneer Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, entered service in 1928 and went on to complete 590 flights covering more than a million miles, including the first commercial transatlantic passenger service, the first circumnavigation of the globe by airship, and the first nonstop aerial crossing of the Pacific, before its retirement in 1937.Images were scanned at 600dpi. The surface is clean and glossy with good contrast throughout the frame and cell detail, and the corners and edges show only light, expected handling wear with no creases, tears, or stains noted.
