Since a properly ballasted airship is nearly weightless in the air, the crew\'s job was less about lifting dead weight and more about fighting wind and momentum, a maneuver period press routinely described as a delicate operation even for an experienced ground crew.Flight power came from five Maybach VL2 V-12 engines of 550 horsepower each, mounted in individual external cars along the hull and turning propellers like the one pictured; these original engines ran roughly 1,000 hours between scheduled overhauls without losing performance, and the same original set was still flying the ship after logging more than 600,000 miles by the end of 1934.The Graf Zeppelin, built by Luftschiffbau Zeppelin under chairman Hugo Eckener and named for airship pioneer Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, entered service in 1928 and went on to complete 590 flights covering more than a million miles, including the first commercial transatlantic passenger service, the first circumnavigation of the globe by airship, and the first nonstop aerial crossing of the Pacific, before its retirement in 1937.Images were scanned at 600dpi.
