A small lithographed tin stamp pad printed "EXCELLENT SELF-INKING STAMP PAD." and "MADE IN JAPAN," with a Native American chief in a feathered war bonnet filling the left third of the lid. The printing is done in warm ochre and orange with black line work, in the flat two-colour style Japanese export tinware used before and just after the war, and the hinged lid still opens and closes on its original spine hinge.
It is a desk object with real graphic punch for its size, and the wear is part of the appeal. Tins in this pattern turn up much less often than the American Fulton pads that share the shelf with them.
Condition is honest and should be read before buying. The lithography on the lid is bright and the chief graphic and all lettering are fully legible, but there is paint loss around all four edges and the corners, a white scuff running diagonally across the headdress, and scattered chips down to bare metal. The base is heavily toned and speckled with rust-coloured spotting, with more loss at the rim. The hinge is intact and works, and the original black felt pad is still in place in the base, dry and unbroken with light lint. The inside of the lid is bare metal, toned dark with rust speckling.
