The RIM-162 ESSM program was developed as an international cooperative effort by the US Navy and the 12-nation NATO SEASPARROW Consortium, with Raytheon serving as the prime contractor. Designed to counter supersonic, low-altitude anti-ship cruise missiles, the weapon underwent rigorous Engineering and Manufacturing Development flight tests.
The CTV (Control Test Vehicle) series was critical for validating the missile's autopilot, thrust-vectoring jet vane control system, and high-G aerodynamic maneuverability.
