Auld Co. 42D8331 aircraft crash / emergency survival axe, the well-known U.S. military aviation pattern introduced during the WWII era and used aboard military and civilian aircraft for many years afterward. This example retains a substantial amount of old yellow safety paint on the steel head. The molded insulated handle is marked “42 D 8331” and “TEST FOR 20000 VOLTS.” A faint but identifiable D. L. Auld winged-A maker mark is visible on the steel head beneath the yellow paint. Details:

• 42D8331 aircraft crash-axe pattern.
• Broad chopping blade with long curved piercing pick.
• Triangular opening in the steel head.
• Molded electrically insulated black grip.
• Grip marked “TEST FOR 20000 VOLTS.”
• Substantial surviving yellow paint.
• Approximately 15-3/8" overall length.
• Head approximately 7-3/4" wide.

Condition:

• Vintage unrestored condition with extensive age-related surface rust, oxidation, scratches, wear, and paint loss.
• Yellow paint remains across substantial areas of both sides of the steel head and has a green tint to it from aging.
• Cutting edge and piercing pick show age and use.
• Molded black grip shows age-related wear but retains legible identification and voltage-test markings.
• The faint D. L. Auld winged-A mark remains visible beneath the painted surface.
• No attempt has been made to polish or restore the steel.
