Rare Antique Clarnico Mitcham Mints Glass-Front Octagonal Shop Counter Display Tin
Product Overview:
Up for sale is an authentic antique Clarnico Mitcham Mints countertop shop display tin, dating from the late Edwardian to early Art Deco era (circa 1910–1920s). Manufactured by the famous British confectioners Clarke, Nickolls & Coombs (Clarnico) in London, this octagonal tin was designed specifically for retail counters. It features an integrated vertical glass viewing window on the front panel so sweet shop customers could see the mints remaining inside.
Dimensions:
• Height: 8.5 inches (to the top of the lid)
• Width: 5.5 inches (across the widest points of the base)
Design & Graphics:
The canister features a beautiful, dark lithographed background adorned with intricate Art Nouveau floral arrangements, garlands, and golden accents. The front face features the prominent "CLARNICO" branding at the top and "MITCHAM MINTS" beneath the central glass pane. The circular lid is accented with gold linear vertical panels and geometric borders.
Condition Report:
This tin is in good antique condition and shows authentic patina that only comes with age.
• Glass Panel: Excellent condition. The original glass front is fully intact, firmly seated, and completely free of cracks, chips, or scratches.
• Exterior Lithography: Displays wonderful aging. There is standard darkening, minor surface scuffs, and fading consistent with a 100-year-old shop-used item. The lid shows expected gold paint wear and surface oxidation on the top surface.
• Interior: Shows typical surface oxidation and rust spotting primarily on the inner bottom panel, but remains structurally sound with no holes or metal rot.
• Base Modification: A previous owner has neatly applied a deep blue / purple felt fabric to the exterior bottom base.
