An unusual oversized shell-form decorative box by Castilian Imports Inc., made in China. The sculptural exterior features a warm faux-wood painted finish with raised gold scrolling and burgundy floral accents.
The hinged lid opens on brass-tone hardware with a chain stay, revealing a striking black interior decorated with a perched bird, a nest containing two chicks, foliage, and a dimensional crab accent. This is a substantial, heavy statement piece with wonderful presence.
The underside retains a Made in China label, a partial original Castilian Imports label that appears to read item 4714/5, and a later retailer label identifying it as “4714 Painted Floral Shell Box With Painted Bird Interior.” The retailer label shows a former compare-at price of $659 and sale price of $459.
CONDITION: Fair vintage condition with a disclosed repair. A previously detached section along the upper rim appears to have been reattached previously. The repair line remains visible. There is extensive paint and finish loss along the shell seam, together with scattered chips, scuffs, scratches, small finish losses, and wear to the gold and burgundy decoration. The black-painted interior and underside show additional surface wear, speckling, and scratches. The original Castilian label is partially torn and covered by the later retailer label.
