Forged in Pennsylvania between roughly 1890 and 1910, this piece represents the pinnacle of golden-age American edge-tool craftsmanship. Charles Hammond tools are legendary among enthusiasts for their uncompromising quality and exceptional steel tempers.This is a true single-bevel hewing tool (chisel ground) designed specifically for a right-handed user. Condition Report:
This hatchet is in Very Good Vintage Working Condition. The steel head boasts a nice, authentic dark fire-born patina with very clean, highly legible factory stampings. The blade is remarkably free of any major chips or deep cracks and has lost very little steel over its lifetime, indicating it was always sharpened properly by hand.
The poll (hammer face) shows heavy, honest mushrooming and rolled edges from historical field use, giving the tool an incredible working character. The hickory handle is beautifully aged with deep, natural hand-oil staining along the grip; it remains securely cross-wedged to the head with an extremely tight, stable fit.
