Vintage Barling TVF "Guinea Grain" Size 5 Flat-Bottom Pot Sitter Estate Pipe (Transition Era, c. 1960-1962)
Item Overview:
Magnificent and highly collectible vintage estate pipe from one of England's most historic makers: B. Barling & Sons. This is a robust, round-shanked flat-bottomed Pot (Sitter) featuring the prestigious and proprietary Barling "TVF" (The Very Finest) stamp, indicating a high-grade block of briar selected for its exceptional graining.
The Finish (Guinea Grain):
This pipe showcases Barling’s legendary "Guinea Grain" execution. The old-school carvers meticulously left the sides of the bowl smooth to highlight a stunning display of dense bird’s-eye and tight cross-grain. To bypass natural surface variations in the wood, the front and back of the bowl were given a beautiful, rugged partial rustication. This artistic blend of smooth and craggy textures makes the pipe entirely unique.
Dating & Stampings:
This piece dates precisely to the highly coveted Barling Transition Era (1960–1962), a brief golden window where artisans were utilizing the family's finest remaining pre-corporate briar stocks while transitioning to modern size stampings.
The shank stampings mostly have been buffed off. Through magnification, the following were discovered:
• Bowl/Shank Junction: Stamped with a standalone size "5" (Designating a substantial King-size/Large bowl).
• Shank Side A: Faint remnants of the iconic "Barling" brand script are visible above it.
• End of shank side A faint “TVF" (The Very Finest).
• Shank Side B Made in England
Dimensions & Specifications (Approximate):
• Shape: Flat-Bottom Sitter Pot (Round Shank)
• Size: Barling Size 5
• Stem Material: Vulcanite / Ebonite
Condition Report:
This is an authentic vintage estate piece being sold in as cleaned and buffed. The briar body is incredibly solid with no structural cracks or burnout, showcasing a rich, deep auburn patina. The smooth panels retain brilliant contrast grain. The rim has a light layer of char/darkening typical of gentle use. The original vulcanite stem shows minimal oxidation/surface discoloration from age but features a clean, tight fit into the round mortise.
