Beautiful and unusual vintage 1990s handmade gourd sculpture featuring a mother and baby figure, decorated in a striking Southwestern-inspired palette of turquoise blue, cobalt, cream, and natural earth tones. Signed by folk artist Connie Sanchez.
The large natural gourd forms the mother’s rounded body and elongated neck, while her face is embellished with hand-painted geometric designs, dimensional details, feathers, fiber, leather, shell, abalone and mixed-media accents. A tiny bundled baby rests against her body, creating a particularly sweet mother-and-child composition.
This is a wonderfully distinctive piece of 1990s Southwestern folk art with lots of texture, color, and handmade character. It would make an eye-catching addition to an eclectic art collection, Southwestern interior, bohemian home, maximalist display, or collection of vintage gourd art.
