Up for sale is a vintage souvenir pipestone (catlinite) pipebowl and wooden stem, originally acquired at the Pipestone National Monument inMinnesota, in the late 1960s. It features a hand-carved soft red stone bowl anda detachable wooden stem. This item represents mid-century appreciation forthis historic quarry site.

A pipestone pipe, historically referred to as a "peacepipe" or chanunpa (in Lakota), is a deeply sacred ceremonial pipe.It features a bowl hand-carved from catlinite (a smooth, quartz-free redmudstone) and a separate wooden stem.

For thousands of years, indigenous people have quarried this unique stone at what is now Pipestone NationalMonument in Minnesota. In their customes and traditions, the deep red stone representsthe blood of ancestors.

The pipe itself serves as a portable altar used to carryprayers to the Creator. The smoking of the pipe generally consists of puffingon it, not inhaling, and is viewed as a means of sending one’s prayers to theGreat Spirit and making a connection between the earthly world and thespiritual world.
