Vintage 1920\'s-30\'s THE SOUTHERN HOTEL Baltimore, Md Skeleton Room Key and Fob:
$26.00

For sale is a vintage skeleton key which is attached to a bakelite fob for room #1001 of the historic Southern Hotel that was located in Baltimore, Md at the intersection of Light & Redwood Streets. The fob was designed with a postage guarantee that allowed guests who accidentally left with it the opportunity to return it to the hotel for a fee that would be paid by the hotel. This dates as far back as the 1920\'s as hotel skeleton keys were phased out during that decade in favor of more secure pi-tumbler cylinder locks. In addition, the fob appears to be made from bakelite which was popular during the 1920\'s.The Southern Hotel was a premier 14 story, 400 room luxury hotel located on a tract of land that once housed a hotel, The Fountain Inn, that hosted George Washington on at least 2 occasions. The Fountain Inn became the Carrollton Inn in 1872 but burned to the ground in the Great Baltimore Fire of 1904. It was rebuilt at the cost of over $1.25 million and reopened in 1918 under the name of the Southern Hotel. It was Baltimore\'s first large Jewish owned major hotel and offered a kosher kitchen which served as a premier hub for the jewish business and legal community. It closed for business in 1964 and the building was demolished in 1999.This hotel key is structurally sound and displays honest wear consistent with one at or nearing 100 years of age. There is wear on the nickel (or chrome) plating but there are no cracks or broken teeth. The fob appears to be made from Bakelite which was very popular in the 1920\'s. It has a lot of dings and stains.
