Vintage highly collectible piece of American tool history: an original Johnston "20th Century" Combination Tool / Adjustable Wrench head.
This unique multi-tool mechanism was invented by Samuel J. Johnston out of Leesburg, VA and officially granted US Patent in 1901. It was manufactured by the renowned P. Lowentraut Mfg. Co. in Newark, NJ. Designed as a modular marvel of its era, this tool can adjust its jaw orientation to act as a monkey wrench or a pipe wrench, and features the iconic gear-toothed base and thumb wing-nut meant to interlock with a wooden bit brace handle.
Highly raised lettering casting. Clearly reads "20TH CENTURY" along the main beam and "S.J. JOHNSTON / LEESBURG, VA" along the upper jaw assembly. The "PAT. 1901" text is cleanly stamped.
The adjustment thumb screw moves the dual jaws smoothly along the threaded column. The teeth on the pivot dial show some ware. Features a beautiful, authentic aged brass/bronze patina across the cast body. It is missing the optional extended crank rod handle piece, but the main complex wrench head assembly is entirely complete and fully functional on its own. Perfect addition to any premium antique tool collection, patent model display, or a unique conversation piece for a workshop or man cave! It has not been cleaned and is being sold as is as found. Please see photos as part of the description and thanks for looking.
