Striking large vintage Mexican pottery vase featuring colorful hand-painted geometric decoration on a matte, opaque surface.
The vase is decorated from top to bottom with numerous horizontal bands in rich cobalt blue, terracotta red, green, cream and black. Designs include stepped geometric forms, meanders/Greek-key motifs, zigzags, dots, waves and other pre-Columbian-inspired patterns.
The extensive use of deep blue is especially attractive and gives this piece a wonderful graphic quality.
The pottery itself is handmade, with irregularities visible inside the vessel that are characteristic of hand-worked pottery. The underside is hand marked MEXICO and also has a partially legible number or inventory marking.
A substantial decorative piece that displays beautifully and would work especially well with Mexican folk art, Southwestern, Spanish Colonial, rustic or eclectic decor.
